Mahkota polls: Johor DAP to help ensure Barisan victory, says Chin Tong

JOHOR BARU: All Johor DAP leaders have been told to help ensure the victory of Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the Mahkota by-election, says Liew Chin Tong.

The Johor DAP chief said all party leaders were required to work towards electing Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah in the Sept 28 by-election.

“We recognise the importance of the Mahkota by-election in shaping the political landscape for the next general election.

“If the Unity Government candidate is accepted by all sections of the constituency’s electorate, the by-election will help pave the way for a stronger and more stable federal government, as well as closer collaboration between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan at the state level,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday (Sept 9).

Liew, who is also the deputy investment, trade, and industry minister, said this would also prepare for Malaysia’s resurgence and second economic takeoff.

Last Saturday (Sept 7), Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz announced Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien as the candidate for the Mahkota by-election.

The state seat in Kluang fell vacant after its assemblyman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain from Umno, passed away on Aug 2, three days after she was hospitalised.

The Election Commission set this Saturday (Sept 14) for Nomination Day, Sept 24 for early voting and Sept 28 for polling day.

DAP’s Chew Chong Sin and Wong Shu Qi currently hold the seats in Mahkota's neighbouring state of Mengkibol and the Kluang parliamentary seat, respectively.
