Mahkota polls: Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien chosen as BN candidate, says Johor MB

KLUANG: Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah is set to be Barisan Nasional's candidate for the Mahkota by-election, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The Johor Mentri Besar, who is also the Mahkota by-election director, made the announcement during the launch of the coalition's election machinery here.

The announcement was met with a loud cheer from attendees, which included leaders and members of parties from Barisan and Pakatan Harapan.

Also present at the event here were Barisan chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, MIC vice-president Datuk Dr R. Nelson, Parti Amanah Negara vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and DAP deputy secretary-general Liew Chin Tong.

The Mahkota state seat became vacant when its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, passed away on Aug 2, three days after she was hospitalised.

Sharifah Azizah had won the seat in the March 2022 Johor state election by a 5,166-vote majority, beating three other candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan and Parti Warisan.

Polling for the by-election has been set for Sept 28 while nomination day for candidates is on Sept 14.

It was earlier reported that Syed Hussien was among two names that have emerged as frontrunners to be Barisan's candidate in the upcoming Mahkota by-election.
