Up in smoke: RM5.5mil in illicit cigs among contraband destroyed by Sandakan cops

KOTA KINABALU: Sandakan police have conducted a disposal exercise for contraband goods seized between 2019 and May, including cigarettes of various types valued at RM5.5mil.

Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek monitored the exercise, carried out at a scrap factory at Mile 8 at 10am on Friday (Aug 23).

“We disposed of a total of 184,700 packs of cigarettes of various types, estimated to be worth RM5,543,100.

"These were seized in nine separate cases investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said.

Apart from cigarettes, police also destroyed 504 cryptocurrency mining machines, 12 monitors and 150 other related items.

Seven boat engines used in four migrant smuggling cases investigated under Section 26J of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 were also destroyed.

“These items were seized between 2019 and May this year and we received disposal orders from the courts and deputy public prosecutor.

“The items were destroyed using heavy machinery and then burned,” ACP Fuad added.

The exercise was also witnessed by Sandakan deputy OCPD Supt Ramasamy Kuppan, Integrity and Standards Compliance Department head Asst Supt Yunus Sahak, and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
