KOTA KINABALU: The state’s main port operator Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) has received Green Terminal Label Certification, among the first in South-East Asia to achieve this recognition.

The certification was given to its subsidiaries Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP) and Sapangar Bay Oil Terminal (SBOT) by Bureau Veritas, a global leader in certification services.

According to a statement by SPSB on Monday (Aug 19), this recognition underscored its commitment to sustainable port operations and continuously improving its services to port users.

"We are honoured to be among the first in the region to receive this accreditation.

"It affirms our longstanding green practices and propels us in our journey towards aligning with global maritime sustainability agenda,” the statement quoted SPSB managing director Datuk Ng Kiat Min as saying.

She said SBCP and SBOT joining the ranks of globally certified Green Terminal ports positions them at the forefront of sustainable port practices.

The Green Terminal Label Certification, developed by France-based Bureau Veritas, is a global standard that acknowledges port facilities for commitment to environmental sustainability and excellence in operational practices.

Ng said a rigorous five-day evaluation was conducted, examining SBCP and SBOT's environmental initiatives, standard operating procedures and policies.

She said the audit focussed on eight key pillars: sustainability management, community commitment, sustainable development, green energy solutions, digital integration, employee training, environmental control, and circular economy practices.

“Looking ahead, SPSB views this achievement as a catalyst for broader green initiatives and is committed to pursuing green port status across all ports under its management,” she added.
