Fahmi denies instructing Google to make changes on currency exchange report


PETALING JAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has denied social media reports that he has instructed Google to disable its currency converter widget for the ringgit.

"Google Malaysia has done so after discussions with Bank Negara Malaysia," said Fahmi in a post on X on Thursday (Aug 15).

Fahmi said Google had said they were running tests with a data provider whom they have identified and would restore the widget once they are sure incidents do not occur.

This is due to the search engine's "inaccurate" reporting of the currency's exchange rate against the US dollar.

The minister's response came after a social media user mocked Fahmi, saying his biggest contribution as a minister was "ordering" Google to disable its currency converter feature.

On March 22, Fahmi said Google had informed him of the decision to temporarily disable features - including the currency converter widget - to prevent future errors in displaying ringgit exchange rates.
