A CAMPAIGN for a Tamil school in Johor Baru’s Taman Universiti has received strong support from the local Indian community, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Chandramohan Sithambaram, the spokesperson of the campaign, said the residential area in Skudai used to be the Buan Heng Estate before it was broken up and redeveloped.

A Tamil school which had been operating in the estate was lost in the process.

Many of the Indian families from the estate eventually bought homes in Taman Universiti and many more families moved to the area from other towns as well.

The community, said Chandramohan, is still in a battle to recover many aspects of their lives, which were lost during the transition, one of which was the Tamil school. It is high time a Tamil school was built to serve their needs, he added.

The signature campaign conducted by the group during the Taman Universiti Maha Mariamman Temple festival was a big success. The community is looking to get the proposal going, he said.
