Two killed, four injured in car crash near Port Dickson

PORT DICKSON: Two people were killed when their car collided with a backhoe carrying out excavation work near the Kg Gelam traffic junction early today (Aug 14).

Port Dickson police chief Supt Aidi Sham Mohamed said that four others travelling in the car suffered light injuries in the accident which took place around 1.35am.

He said the deceased were the 24-year-old car driver and an 18-year-old front seat passenger who was a college student and added that Fire and Rescue Department personnel had to extricate their remains from the wreckage.

Two other female college students aged 18 and 19 and two males aged 17 and 16 were injured and were taken out from the wreckage by the public.

Supt Aidi Sham said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased driver was unemployed while the 17-year-old male teenager was a labourer and the 16-year-old was in secondary school.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel had to extricate the remains of the deceased from the wreckage.

"We believe the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a cone and crashed into the backhoe.

"Checks showed that the driver of the backhoe was carrying out digging works for the laying of underground cables when the accident took place," he said in a statement.

Supt Aidi Sham said the case was being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He urged eyewitnesses to call the district police station at 06 647 2222 to assist in investigations.
