967 summonses issued in a day during KL ops

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 967 traffic summonses were issued for various offences in an integrated operation here.

City deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said 2,397 vehicles were inspected during the operation, which was held at various locations including Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Bangsar from 11am on Saturday to 5am yesterday.

“We seized 29 vehicles for illegal modifications.

“A total of eight people were detained after they tested positive for drugs while 13 others were picked up for drunk driving,” he told reporters at one of the roadblocks here yesterday.

The operation, headed by the City Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), was jointly conducted with the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Environment Department (DOE).

Also present were KL JSPT chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa and KL JPJ deputy director Erick Jusiang.

DCP Azry said the operation’s main objective was to ensure the motorists adhere to traffic regulations.

“This will be carried out every week following complaints from the public on noisy exhausts and dangerous stunts performed by some road users,” he added.

He said the DOE, which checked on the sound of the exhausts, found that several motorcycles had been illegally modified.

He reminded the public to always abide by traffic regulations.

“Always follow the instruction from the authorities, including stopping the vehicles at roadblocks.

“Anyone who performs dangerous stunts on the road will be detained and prosecuted under the Road Transport Act 1987,” he warned.

During the operation, several motorcycle riders were seen going against the traffic flow to bypass the roadblocks.

Some stopped and waited at nearby locations on seeing the operation.
