PETALING JAYA: The wait is over for the 1,193 students who scored 10As in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams hoping to enter the matriculation programme.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said on Wednesday (Aug 7) night that these students received text messages from the Education Ministry stating that they have been accepted into the programme.

“After the Cabinet's decision on June 29, these 1,193 outstanding students were given the opportunity to be admitted to the pre-university programme.

“The admitted students can choose to enroll in this pre-university programme or pursue other pathways to further education,” he said in a Facebook post early Thursday morning (Aug 8).

He said the students can check their status online at 3pm on Thursday (Aug 8).

Wong then said when the first round of matriculation admissions was announced on June 20, 1,188 of the 3,000 spots for non-bumiputra students were for students with 10 As, while the remaining 1,812 were for students with fewer than 10 As.

“At that time, 1,193 students with 10 As did not receive an offer,” he added.

Subsequently on July 11, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced in Parliament that SPM 2023 candidates who scored 10As but did not receive an offer to join matriculation would receive their acceptance letters before the third week of August.

Wong said during the second round of admissions on July 5, 400 students with 10 As received their offers, while on July 16, in the third round, 362 students with 10 As were accepted.

He added that on July 25, in the fourth round, 200 students with 10 As were accepted.

“The process has not been easy. Many initially had doubts about Cabinet's decision and the Education Ministry. This brave decision by Cabinet this year is a small breakthrough and a significant progress. Congratulations to all the students, ” said Wong.
