Duo missing, two others survive in boat collision off Sabah waters


KOTA KINABALU: Two men are feared to have drowned while two others survived in a boat crash at Semporna waters recently.

The incident, which was said to have happened at around 6am on Tuesday (Aug 6) at the Sebangkat Island area, involved two boats while the victims were fishing.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Semporna director Amir Shubli said according to information received, four people had gone out to sea at around 5pm on Monday.

“During that period, a boat had apparently hit their vessel. The skipper of that boat escaped after the incident,” he said in a statement.

He said two 30-year-old men identified as Reymar and Bocoi, survived but Reymar sustained serious bodily injuries while two others - Rommek Tura and Jimal, also 30-year-olds, have gone missing.

“He hurt his arm, knees and back and is now receiving treatment at the Semporna Hospital while two others have yet to be found.

“Our search operation has entered its third day and has now widened and expanded to larger areas from the accident scene,” he said.

Others involved in this search and rescue operation are the navy, marine police, Civil Defence Force and Sabah Parks personnel.
