RTM's congratulatory post to King in Malay mistranslated by Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR: Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) says it did not make any post in English on Facebook about the installation of Sultan Ibrahim as the 17th King of Malaysia.

In a statement on Sunday (July 21), RTM's public relations division said what was seen on its official Facebook page was an automated translation by Facebook of its post in Malay.

"If users activate automatic translation, the translation will appear.

"The English translation by Facebook was incorrect. RTM did not upload any condolence message in conjunction with the installation of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong," the read the statement.

RTM said they had since lodged a police report and that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had contacted Meta about the erroneous translation.

"Meta also confirmed that they have rectified the issue," added the statement.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil on Facebook also expressed regret over accusations that RTM was making inappropriate posts.

"Some people accuse RTM of making inappropriate Facebook posts in English. The original post was in BM (Bahasa Malaysia)," he said. – Bernama
