Fahmi: King wants firm action on social media issues

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has instructed the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to act sternly in addressing issues related to social media.

According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Sultan Ibrahim issued the directive during an audience at Istana Negara on Wednesday morning when preparations for the King’s Installation Ceremony on July 20 were discussed.

During the session, Fahmi said he also briefed Sultan Ibrahim on the tragic case of a social media influencer who was found dead in her home following cyberbullying in Gombak Setia, Selangor.

“After the formal discussion, His Majesty expressed concerns over social media issues as he was informed of cyberbullying incidents.

“His Majesty emphasised that the Communications Ministry and MCMC must take firm action on this matter, reflecting his deep concern,” he told a media briefing at Parliament building here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Fahmi said Sultan Ibrahim reiterated his message against the misuse of social media for arguments or to shame others, saying that such actions could sow division and conflict.

Fahmi added that the ministry would work together with the relevant agencies to ensure that social media remained a safe platform for all.
