Man dies in head-on collision in Tawau

KOTA KINABALU: A 33-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision involving his car and another vehicle at Taman Gaya, Jalan Kuhara in Tawau on Friday (July 5) morning.

Firemen extricated the victim, identified as Tsen Yeak Yang, who was pinned in his car, and was later pronounced dead by health officials at the scene.

Tawau fire station chief Jemishin Ujin said they were alerted of the incident at 2.01am and a team of nine was rushed to the scene, arriving four minutes later.

“The team used a special tool to extricate the victim, and the body has been handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said initial investigations revealed that the victim was heading to Fujimart from Taman May Flower when he collided with another car driven by a 19-year-old travelling from Taman Semarak towards Tawau town.

“The two cars collided in the middle of the intersection after the traffic light, causing the victim’s car to sway 155m to the left shoulder of the road, white the teenager’s car spun, hit a pole and skidded 105m into the opposite lane,” said Jasmin.

He said the teenager escaped unhurt.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, in Papar, a trapped two-year-old toddler was rescued after firemen used a special tool to pry open a car Friday morning.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department senior assistant fire commander Mohd Ishak Amran said a team of four responded to the distress call received at 11.20am and arrived at Lorong 3, Taman Takis in Papar five minutes later.

“The boy was freed within minutes and the operation was called off at 11.39am,” he said.
