Boy, 12, drowns during school outing at KK beach

KOTA KINABALU: A school trip to a beach near here turned tragic when a 12-year-old pupil drowned.

The boy was with his classmates and teachers during outdoor activities at the beach near Kg Bakasan, Karambunai.

Kota Kinabalu fire station chief Ordine Gilu said the group from Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu went there at around 7am on Tuesday (June 11) morning.

“Later, the teachers noticed that the boy was missing and called for emergency assistance at 8.57am,” he said in a statement.

He said a search operation found the child's body at 10.25am, some 40km from the shore.

“The body was discovered about 2m underwater, and the victim was pronounced dead by medical officials on the scene,” said Ordine.

The operation ended at 11.54am and the body was handed over to police for further action, he added.
