Free swimming lessons for underprivileged kids in Kota Laksamana

MELAKA: About 40 children from underprivileged families have signed up for free swimming lessons at Kota Laksamana, says Kota Melaka MP.

"We offer the classes to children to promote safety awareness through swimming lessons for those living in flood-prone areas," said Khoo Poay Tiong after launching the initiative on Thursday (June 6).

Khoo said the classes also build the children's confidence.

He said the initiative was launched by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh earlier this year. The project was designed to benefit 1,600 children aged three to 12 from B40 families.

Yeoh was reported by the media in March as saying that the initiative would be implemented throughout the year in states that have recorded a high rate of fatality due to drowning.
