Nine foreign workers rescued from burning billboard along Federal Highway

PETALING JAYA: Nine foreign workers were rescued from the billboard that caught fire along the Federal Highway.

The fire was sighted around noon Friday (May 31) near the University Malaya Medical Centre.

According to one of the victims, the base of the electronic billboard was short-circuited before the fire spread to the top.

Out of the nine victims, one suffered an arm injury while the other suffered minor burns.

The victims were believed to had been maintenance workers of the billboard.

Paramedics were also seen at the scene to help treat the victims.

In a statement on Friday, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said that a distress call was received at 1.15pm on Friday. A total of 17 firefighters were deployed to the scene.

"The fire saw nine victims and all have been successfully saved and handed over to medical officers for further action. The operation was concluded at 3.45pm.

Petaling Jaya deputy OCPD Supt M. Hussin Sollehuddin Zolkifly, when contacted, said that as of now they had not verified the exact number of people who were injured.

He added that the police were awaiting further information from the Fire and Rescue Department.
