Penang Speaker notifies EC of vacant Sungai Bakap seat

( March 06, 2023 ) — LIM BENG TATT/The Star.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang has submitted notification of the vacant Sungai Bakap state seat to the Election Commission (EC) following the death of assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff.

The notice was submitted to Penang EC director Dr Siti Nazariah Abdul Zalim on the state assembly grounds here at 2pm Monday (May 27).

Law said submission of the notice is standard procedure in the event any state seat is vacated owing to a death.

"The passing of the deceased is sad news for all assemblymen, and a great loss for the state, because Nor Zamri was a representative loved by the community.

"Now we will leave it to the EC to carry out its duties,” he told a press conference at the venue.

The EC is required to hold a by-election within 60 days to fill the vacant seat.

Nor Zamri, 56, died at 1.38pm on Friday (May 24) while receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of Hospital Seberang Jaya due to inflammation in the stomach.

Nor Zambri, who was also Nibong Tebal PAS chief, secured 15,433 votes in last August's state election, defeating Pakatan Harapan's Nurhidayah Che Rose by a 1,563-vote majority. – Bernama
