EC to discuss Sungai Bakap's by-election key dates

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will meet on June 6 to discuss the by-election for the Sungai Bakap state seat.

This is after it received an official notification from the Penang state legislative assembly speaker, Law Choo Kiang, about the vacant seat following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff.

"As provided under the Penang State Constitution, the vacant seat must be filled within 60 days from the date the vacancy occurs and confirmed by the EC.

“Accordingly, a special by-election meeting for N.20 Sungai Bakap, Penang, will be held on June 6,” said EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak on Monday (May 27).

The meeting, which would be chaired by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, would decide the important by-election dates.

This includes the date of the Writ of Election, Candidate Nomination Day, Polling Day, the Voters' Registers that would be used, and other preparations to carry out the election, which would be discussed and decided upon.

Nor Zamri, 56, died on Friday (May 24) while receiving treatment at the intensive care unit of Hospital Seberang Jaya due to inflammation in the stomach.
