Man who tried to snatch firearm from police station was drunk, says Penang top cop


GEORGE TOWN: The 35-year-old man who tried to snatch an MP5 submachine gun from a policeman at the Dato Keramat police station was under the influence of alcohol.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said this in the 4am incident on Sunday (May 19), the man had shouted profanities at security and told them to open the gate to the police station.

"Policeman gave him a warning and told him to leave but the suspect tried to snatch the gun from him," said Comm Hamzah in a statement on Sunday (May 19).

"The policeman managed to ward him off. The suspect tried to attack the policeman with a helmet and was hurt as he was being apprehended.

Comm Hamzah said the suspect had two criminal and drug-related offences on his record.

"A four-day remand order has been issued for the suspect until May 22 for further investigation, " he added.
