Jailed for theft at cash deposit machine

KUALA PILAH: A security guard was sentenced to five months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here after he pleaded guilty to stealing RM2,190 from a woman at a bank’s cash deposit machine.Anis Abdul Aziz, 56, did not contest the charge after it was read to him before magistrate Saiful Sayuti.

He was charged with stealing the money, which belonged to the woman’s employer, at 2.53pm on March 31.

The charge was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years upon conviction. Offenders are also liable to a fine.

Anis, who was unrepresented, appealed to the court for a light sentence as the offence was his first, adding he was no longer young.

“I also have to provide for my wife, who suffers from schizophrenia, and a child.

“If I do not work, there is no one else who will provide for them,” he said.

Deputy public prosecutor Khairunisa Zainudin asked for a punishment that was commensurate with the offence as public interest took precedence over personal interest.

“The court also has to send a message to the public that crime does not pay,” she said.
