DBKK refutes allegations of crony company claim

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has refuted allegations in a viral video that it appointed a “crony company” for sanitation and garbage disposal.

DBKK called the allegations “baseless” and stressed that it was satisfied with the company’s performance thus far and that its tasks were completed on time.

The claims had been made in a video titled “DBKK dapat anugerah RASUAH?” (DBKK receives corruption award?), which highlighted an area in Tanjung Aru that was strewn with garbage.

In a statement, DBKK said a site inspection found that the filthy area in the video was the responsibility of Tanjung Aru Eco Development Sdn Bhd (TAED).

“We appointed a local company on Aug 1, 2022, to oversee the cleaning and maintenance at Tanjung Aru 1, while Tanjung Aru 2 and 3 are under TAED,” said the statement.

DBKK said the company oversees areas that include Tanjung Aru Beach, stretching from the Kinabalu Yacht Club building to the wall of Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa; the Tanjung Lipat beach area; garbage traps near the Imago Shopping Mall, Omega and City Mosque; as well as beaches at the mouth of Sungai Likas, the area adjacent to Anjung Senja, and Kampung Kabel.

“We hope that statements made by any individual are reviewed and based on accurate fact-checking.” Complaints can be submitted to the DBKK complaints hotline at 088-313991 or the DBKK WhatsApp hotline.
