Taiwanese-American singer Wang Leehom (pic) was slammed online for making a geographical faux pas during one of his performances in China recently after he mistook Liaoning for Shandong province, reported China Press.
The 47-year-old who was recently performing in Dalian city, Liaoning province, caused an awkward silence among the crowd when he thanked the Shandong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, who he believed was one of the concert organisers.
What he was supposed to have said was the Liaoning Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, which is located around 1,000km northeast of Shandong.
The singer was criticised heavily online for the gaffe.
“He must have gotten 0 for geography. How could he have thought Dalian city was in Shandong?” one netizen wrote.
Immediately after the incident, Wang rectified his mistake by thanking the Liaoning Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism which was posted on Weibo, China’s equivalent of the social media platform X.
It was reported that Wang grew up in the United States and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

When walking off stage after rendering his song, Chau slipped and fell, which caused a panic among concert staff.
Video footage of the incident showed the floor was wet after the rain and the singer’s facial expression showed he was in pain as he tried to get up.
With the help of staff members and several concert-goers, Chau was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Many fans expressed worry for Chau as a fall at his age could be fatal.

A photo of the notice, which was believed to have been taken at a hawker centre in Penang, went viral on Facebook.
