RESIDENTS in Kota Tinggi, Johor, were surprised to be hit by a flood during the heatwave.
Kampung Temenin Baru resident Hasimah Awang, 54, said she has not been home since last Friday. But her neighbour called her yesterday to tell her that her housing area had been affected by the flood, Harian Metro reported.
“My house was flooded up to calf level. I rushed home after learning of the situation and discovered that the wardrobe and everything below, including the carpet, had already been soaked.”
She added that residents there are no strangers to floods. However, the floods typically occur at the beginning of the monsoon season and the year’s end.
“Usually when faced with the monsoon season, my husband and I will be ready to move things to a higher place. This time, the flood was unexpected,” she said.
Mohd Aziz Harun, 63, said the flash flood occurred after three hours of heavy rain.
“This flood originated from the summit of Gunung Panti, which was given approval to be explored for an agricultural project,” he claimed.
“When there is no place for a reservoir, the water trickles down to the village area and, coupled with inadequate drainage, causes water to rise quickly at the residential area,” said the retired army officer.
