Bagavathi, a college student in Namakkal, bought chicken rice for his grandfather Shanmuganathan and mother Nadiya.
Both of them fell ill and were hospitalised after the meal. Shanmuganathan died two days later.
Tests revealed that the rice contained traces of pesticide, which saw authorities temporarily shutting down the restaurant.
However, Bagavathi later admitted during questioning that he was the one who had poisoned the food out of revenge, as Shanmuganathan and Nadiya had apparently scolded him for picking up bad habits in college.
Bagavathi has been charged with murder.
