Papagomo detained for suspected sedition

KUALA LUMPUR: Political activist Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo, has been detained for allegedly insulting His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

In a video, Papagomo allegedly questioned Sultan Ibrahim’s action in meeting the owner of KK Super Mart following the socks issue.

In the same video, he alleged that Sultan Ibrahim had given instructions that Chegubard, whose real name is Badrul Hisham Shaharin, 45, be charged under the Sedition Act.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the arrest was made by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Investigation Unit yesterday.

“He was detained following a police report lodged by a 41-year-old trader who saw the video while surfing social media on Monday.

“Papagomo was detained at his home in Setapak to assist with the investigation,” he said when contacted.

The IGP said a remand application would be made to facilitate investigation.

“We are investigating under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“He is being held at the Dang Wangi police headquarters lock-up,” Razarudin said.
