Drug rehab centre duo change plea, claim trial to causing grievous hurt to trainee

SEREMBAN: Two staff members of a private drug rehabilitation centre changed their plea to not guilty at the Sessions Court here for allegedly causing grievous hurt to a male trainee.

Jason Jai Ganesh Murugiah, 48, who is a supervisor and Kelvin Raymond, 26, an assistant worker, were supposed to have been sentenced Tuesday (April 30) after pleading guilty when they were charged on March 26.

The duo were charged with causing grievous hurt to V. Vasanthakumar, 38, using a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe at the centre in Lenggeng.

They were jointly charged with committing the offence around 11am on March 19.

The duo were charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation.

Offenders can be jailed up to 20 years and be whipped or fined.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syamimi Farhana Muhammad A. Aziz then asked the court to set bail at RM15,000 with one surety for each of the accused.

Counsel for the duo Patrick Samuel asked for a lower bail as both the accused were from poor families.

He said both did not have relatives who could help them raise the bail.

Samuel said both the accused have also been in police custody since their arrest.

"We will also be filing a representation to have the charge reviewed," he said.

He asked the court to set bail at RM5,000 for each accused.

Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi then set bail at RM8,000 with one surety for each and fixed June 21 for remention.
