Calls for stern action in student’s murder case

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has called for stern action against those responsible for the senseless death of a 17-year-old student.

Mohammad Nazmie Aizzat Muhd Narul Azwan was found unconscious on the floor of a vocational college dormitory in Lahad Datu after he was believed to have been beaten by a group of students for allegedly stealing RM85.

Sabah Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan said schools and the Education Department must pay serious attention to cases of bullying, including physical abuse, that have been reported statewide.

“We view this case seriously as it involves violence among students. This incident occurred in a hostel and involved other hostel residents.

“We urge the police and education authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action against those involved,” he said yesterday.

Fairuz also said disciplinary action must be meted out against students who were guilty and that there should not be any compromise on misbehaviour like bullying and violence in schools.

He said the tragedy could have been avoided if the students had alerted college authorities to any pressing issue.

“Students should maintain a high level of discipline and spirit of tolerance.

“Any disagreement or misunderstanding should be reported to the hostel warden immediately,” Fairuz said.

Thirteen suspects have been remanded until March 29 while police are also recording statements of other witnesses.
