KK shifting to digitalised parking system this year, says mayor

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s capital Kota Kinabalu will see a digitalised parking system implemented in the city after October this year, says Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.

He said the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) would introduce the digital payment system after its contract with the company operating the present scratch card system expires in seven months.

"But I cannot give an exact date for it at the moment," he said, after an event at the DBKK office here on Friday (March 15).

"However, we will implement this digital parking payment system by this year after the contract with the current parking operator ends in October," he added.

Sabin disclosed that more than 10 companies had submitted their applications in hopes of operating the new parking payment system.

They were currently going through the proposals pitched by interested companies, he said, adding DBKK was at the final stages of coming to a decision.

"If there is a situation that will allow us to implement this plan earlier, and without any legal hiccups, then we will," he said.

The digitalised parking system was among the priorities announced by Sabin when he took over as mayor in January.

The current parking system, which required motorists to purchase scratch coupons, had received public criticism previously involving, among others, inconsistencies and practicality of the system.

Another aspect of the city that Sabin had announced he wanted to improve after his appointment was to have a centralised public transportation system.
