Sultan Selangor’s term as MKI chairman ends

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor’s tenure as National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI) chairman has come to an end.

“During the last meeting, His Royal Highness expressed appreciation for the cooperation provided by the committee members and the secretariat during the Selangor Ruler’s time as its chairman,” read a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page yesterday.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has been chairman of MKI from March 10, 2022, and his tenure ends tomorrow.

Sultan Sharafuddin emphasised that during his tenure as MKI chairman, it had always been his duty to uphold and defend the principles of Islam in all of its decisions which were made through consultation.

The Selangor Sultan also said he would leave it to the Conference of Rulers to choose a new chairman for MKI from among the Malay Rulers.

According to the MKI Regulations 2022, the chairman is chosen by the Conference of Rulers and the Ruler serves a two-year term. The term can be renewed.

His Royal Highness also reviewed all previous meeting minutes and ensured that the special committee to study the competency of state legislative assemblies to enact Islamic laws had been formed and implemented all of its relevant tasks.

The Sultan also expressed his gratitude for the commitment shown by the council members, state representatives and Jakim, as the secretariat, in carrying out their duties effectively.

The Sultan of Selangor said this after granting an audience to Jakim director-general Datuk Hakimah Mohd Yusoff and MKI secretariat members.
