Teen held over sniper-like photo on social media

Window shot: The photo that went viral on social media.

KOTA KINABALU: A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a photo of him apparently holding a firearm and pointing the weapon out of a window at a condominium made the rounds on social media.

A team from the city police headquarters detained the suspect at the condominium off Jalan Kayu Madang at 5.36pm on Saturday.

OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said police were alerted to the viral photo by the public through WhatsApp.

ACP Mohd Zaidi said the people were alarmed by the suspect’s action of aiming the weapon from the window of the condominium.

Following an inspection, he said, police found imitation weapons resembling an AK47 rifle and a gun.

“The suspect admitted to committing the act at about 9am on March 2,” he said.

The boy, he added, claimed he was aiming to shoot at stationary objects.

“The suspect also told police that he bought two imitation firearms, priced at RM158 and RM54, from a shop in the city,” said ACP Mohd Zaidi.

Acting on the information, police raided the shop located in a shopping mall.

“We seized a host of fake firearms and detained a boy, aged 15, and a 19-year-old woman, who worked at the shop,” he said.

The suspects have been brought to the city police headquarters to assist in investigations under Section 36 of the Firearms Act for possession, sale and buying of imitation weapons.
