KUCHING: The late Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud has been laid to rest at the family cemetery at his private residence in Demak Jaya here.

Taib was buried at 2.20pm on Thursday (Feb 22) next to his first wife, Puan Sri Laila Taib, who died in 2009.

As a light drizzle fell, Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah headed a list of dignitaries to scatter flower petals over the grave.

He was followed by Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Brunei Prince Pengiran Muda Abdul Mateen Bolkiah, Taib's wife Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi Taib and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Earlier, Taib's remains lay in state at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly complex for members of the public to pay their last respects from 8am to 11.30am.

The casket was then brought to Masjid Demak for prayers.

Twelve cannons from the 8th Royal Artillery Regiment lined the route to the mosque, firing an 87-round salute in honour of Taib.

The former governor and chief minister of Sarawak passed away on Wednesday (Feb 21) at the age of 87.
