ALOR SETAR: Three military personnel from the 3rd Batallion of Perak’s Pengkalan Hulu Border Regiment were killed when a lorry rammed into them as they were alighting from their vehicle after a breakdown along the North-South Expressway.
The lorry driver was also seriously injured in the collision with three military lorries at KM77.5 of the northbound lane of the expressway near Gurun, Kedah.
Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue station chief Assistant Fire Supt Mohd Fauzi Razali said all three soldiers, aged 30 to 40, were confirmed dead at the scene by officials from the Health Ministry.
“It is believed that all the military lorries were travelling in a convoy and had to make a stop when one of the vehicles broke down.
“Just as the soldiers alighted from their trucks, a 31-year-old lorry driver lost control of his vehicle, which skidded and hit the victims,” he said in a statement to Bernama yesterday.
Supt Mohd Fauzi Razali said the fire station had received an emergency call at 10.22am, and despatched a team of firefighters as well as six others from the Pendang fire station to the scene of the incident.
The lorry driver was sent to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah for further treatment while the bodies of the three soldiers were sent to the forensic unit of the same hospital for a post-mortem.
