Retiree loses almost half a million ringgit to property scam

SEREMBAN: A 57-year-old woman has lost RM460,000 over the purchase of a property that she never received.

Seremban police chief Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said the victim, a retiree, met the suspect face-to-face and agreed to buy the property in question.

"She then made six bank transactions and handed over cash to the suspect to buy the property.

"The suspect told her the entire process would be completed within two months," he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 2).

However, when the victim tried to contact the suspect after the two months were up, she was unable to reach him.

She then realised she had been scammed and decided to lodge a report on Thursday (Feb 1).

ACP Mohamad Hatta advised the public to exercise caution when dealing with matters involving large sums of cash.

He also advised them to verify all information and claims with the relevant agencies.

He added that the public can also call the Commercial Crime Investigation Department Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599.
