IT may be a popular traditional delicacy to usher in Chinese New Year, but this has not stopped cake-maker Rosidah Muda from cashing in.

Rosidah from Kuala Terengganu specialises in producing traditional Malay cakes, but has also been making her own “kuih-bakul” or “nian gao” for sale for the past eight years.

The 50-year-old said she began making about 500 of the traditional glutinous rice cake in 2016 for her loyal customers who were curious to find out what kuih bakul tastes like.

“I did not expect that the feedback would be so positive... I have not looked back since. Making the glutinous rice cakes is now my part-time income source,” she told Utusan Malaysia.

The mother of seven sells her cakes for between RM10 and RM12 depending on the packaging, which includes banana leaf wrapping.

Besides Malay customers, Rosidah said she also has Chinese customers, including non-Muslim ones, who buy her cakes as gifts for their Muslim friends.

> Actress and singer Siti Nordiana has apologised to fans for a misunderstanding that came about from a photograph of her in a wedding gown.

Fans had assumed that the starlet was ending her 15-year journey as a single mother after the photograph made its rounds on social media.

“In truth, the photo was for a special solo concert that will be held in conjunction with my 25-year milestone in the industry.

“I chose the wedding theme because it represented my ‘wedding anniversary’ with my fans,” the 39-year-old told Harian Metro.

The anniversary concert, themed Memori Berkasih Siti Nordiana 25 Tahun, will be held on May 11.
