Nation's first trial under anti-stalking law begins today

SHAH ALAM: The trial for the nation's very first case under the new anti-stalking law begins at the Magistrates Court here on Wednesday (Jan 17).

This one-day trial will see 37-year-old accused Mohamad Safiq Rosli sentenced on the same day, as requested by his defence counsel.

Mohamad Safiq is accused of stalking photographer Acacia Marfiana Daud on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter.

He was charged and will be punished under the new Section 507A of the Penal Code which comes with a jail term not exceeding three years, a fine or both upon sentencing.

The new law came into effect in May last year.

Mohamad Safiq had pleaded not guilty when charged last Aug but changed his plea to guilty on Dec 15.

He had pleaded guilty of incessantly stalking Acacia Mardiana on her X account @ShaFoShizzie through his X account @sopert99.

Mohamad Safiq is accused of stalking her for years and had apparently even shadowed her to the United Kingdom.

He had also been sent for a medical insanity evaluation at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta.
