Sirim told to develop high-powered water pumps to deal with floods

KOTA TINGGI: The Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) has been told to develop high-powered water pumps to address flood issues, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Deputy Prime Minister said having a local-made pump to get rid of stagnant flood waters would avoid the need for such imports.

"The water pumps that I approved during my visit to the flood-hit locations in Kota Tinggi, Segamat and Batu Pahat last year have not arrived yet.

"This is due to the procurement processes so I have asked Sirim to produce its own high-powered water pumps.

"Once the water pumps are ready, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) can purchase them directly from Sirim," he said in a press conference after visiting the SK Taman Kota Jaya temporary flood relief centre here on Tuesday (Jan 9).

Ahmad Zahid said Sirim had already come up with its own water filter system to supply fresh water to flood victims and areas with disrupted water supply.

Earlier, he also witnessed the handing over of three water filter units to the Civil Defence Force.

He added that he has asked Nadma to order 20 units of the water filters to standby for future uses.
