PETALING JAYA: All ministries have been directed to give assistance to flood victims as the welfare of the people is the priority regardless of political affiliations, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The National Disaster Management Committee chairman said funds have been allocated to all states that are expected to be hit by floods this monsoon season, and flood relief centres to accommodate more than two million victims have been set up.

“I have ensured early preparation and directed all government agencies to be well-equipped, providing assistance to flood victims in the affected states.

“The Federal Government has also allocated funds for disaster management to all states, irrespective of their political affiliation,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, said all temporary relief centres were stocked up with essential supplies, and with information streamlined from the district to the state and federal levels, to ensure quick response.

Putrajaya has allocated RM323.63mil to the National Disaster Management Committee for use at 160 districts, he said.

“The Social Welfare Department is prepared to activate 8,481 temporary relief centres nationwide with the capacity to accommodate 2,158,743 victims. It has also received an allocation of RM35.85mil for disaster management nationwide.

“Overall, 61,839 officers and members from various government agencies at all levels are on full alert,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid added that as it was a collective effort, the Federal Government was working with state governments and district administrations.

He also stressed that politics should be left behind when lives are at stake.

“The well-being of the Malaysian people always takes precedence. The unity government has never sidelined any state governed by the Opposition in delivering humanitarian aid during disasters.

“Even when a state government is not aligned to Putrajaya, we will still provide assistance, regardless of political party. This includes Kelantan and Terengganu,” he added.
