‘Sim Swap’ scam is fake, warning not from police, says Bukit Aman

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman denied the existence of the "Sim Swap" scam, where a scammer can access a user's phone at the press of a button.

In a statement on Sunday (Dec 24), Federal Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said that the police had noticed that a message claiming that such a scam had existed was being circulated on social media.

"According to the message, a victim would receive a call before being instructed to press '1' on their phone. Once they do so, the victim's phone is erased and taken over by the scammer.

"Then their bank accounts would be accessed, and all the money inside would be transferred into another account.

“The message was said to have been from 'JSJ Komersial PDRM'," he said.

Comm Ramli stressed that the message was false and that the CCID had not issued such an advisory.

"Furthermore, no reports on such a modus operandi have been received. However, as a precaution, all phone users are advised not to click on any suspicious links and to ignore any instructions given out by unknown individuals," he said.

He added that all advisories from the CCID would be published through official channels and media and that the public could contact the police directly through the CCID infoline at 013 2111 222 or their nearest police station for verification.
