KOTA KINABALU: Flooding at certain areas in Sandakan due to downpours in the district on Tuesday (Dec 19) saw some 36 villagers from Kampung Garinono rescued and relocated to a temporary relief centre by authorities.

After the alert about the rising water level came in at 6:06am, the Fire and Rescue Department, along with other agencies, made their way to the village located at Batu 25, Jalan Labuk.

“Several houses there were inundated. The Fire and Rescue Department, along with other agencies like the police and Civil Defence Force, worked together to transport them to a safe location.

“There were six families involved. They were initially brought to the transit point at Dewan Masjid Nurul Iman at Kg Pertanian before being placed at the shelter at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pertanian.

“The team continued to monitor the situation there before the operation ended at 6:44pm,” said the Department spokesman.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Semporna, the Department received a report at 1:16pm regarding a fatal accident involving a child pedestrian at a section along Jalan Aman Jaya.

“It was reported that a 12-year-old boy who was walking along the road there was hit by a vehicle.

“He was declared dead on site by the medical officer on duty.

“The body has been handed over to the police for further actions,” said the spokesman.
