Kemaman by-election: More from Chinese community supporting BN, says MCA

CHUKAI: The credibility of Gen (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor (pic) as the former chief of Defence Force has prompted a major shift in Chinese support for the Barisan Nasional candidate ahead of the Kemaman by-election polling day this Saturday (Dec 2).

Terengganu MCA Women's Deputy head Boon Kim Lain said the party machinery could feel this during the 11th day of campaigning on Tuesday (Nov 28).

"They (the people) are beginning to realise and will support the BN candidate, who has a very good image. I think we will make it through,” she said when met while accompanying Raja Mohamed Affandi to campaign around Bandar Chukai on Tuesday.

Kim Lain, who is also the Kemaman MCA Women's Division head, said most Chinese voters in Kemaman hoped that the MP who is elected would develop the area more sustainably.

Meanwhile, Raja Mohamed Affandi is confident that the Chinese voters would give him their full backing on polling day.

"Most of them (Chinese voters) are with BN. I am comfortable with that. With the strong support of the Chinese community for me and BN, we can give a tough fight in the by-election.

"To build a multi-racial country, we need all (races) to be united. Without unity, our efforts will be crippled. I am here based on that principle,” he said.

The Kemaman by-election will see a direct fight between Raja Mohamed Affandi and Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS.

The Election Commission (EC) has set Dec 2 as polling day for the Kemaman by-election, which needs to be held following the decision of the Terengganu Election Court on Sept 26 to nullify the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th general election (GE15).- Bernama
