Reciting prayers on commercial flight take-offs among proposals, says Perikatan MP

KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP has proposed reciting a prayer before a commercial flight take-offs as part of the efforts to make airlines more syariah friendly.

Shaharizukirnain Abdul Kadir (PN-Setiu) said while the transport ministry had welcomed the idea of shariah-compliant flights, it however remained as a proposal and airlines were not obligated to implement it.

"A standard policy should be suggested to airlines, including to recite a prayer before each flight, informing passengers about Muslim prayer times, and allowing full freedom for Muslim female employees to cover their 'aurat'," Shaharizukirnain said when debating the Supply Bill 2023 at the committee level in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Nov 16).

In March, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government had no issue or objection to any airline establishing standard operating procedures for flights based on shariah compliance.

It was up to the airlines to introduce such a policy based at their own discretion.
