Isolated OA tribes stock up before monsoon

GUA MUSANG: The Orang Asli in the interior areas have begun preparing for the monsoon season by stocking up on necessary items.

One of them Maini Kamal, 26, of the Temiar tribe from Pos Tohoi, brought her three children to town to purchase dry and wet food and other necessities.

She said she and her husband had been saving money for the past month to ensure they had enough funds to buy food supplies for the upcoming monsoon season, which typically starts in the middle of the month.

“For today, we have spent more than RM200 on foodstuff and hopefully that can last until after the monsoon.

“Based on our past experience, we have been trapped in the village with no access to town for our food supply due to very bad road conditions,” she told reporters when met at the Rahmah Kasih Sayang sale at RPS Kuala Betis here yesterday, Bernama reported.

Nornani Abus, 37, also from Pos Tohoi, attended the event with a few fellow villagers to purchase food supplies.

They took advantage of the sale on goods running at the time.

“We were able to buy more necessities. Each of us spent about RM150,” she said, adding they bought four packets of rice, cooking oil, wheat flour and sugar as well as some onions and vegetables, among others.
