10 from orphanage hurt in fatal crash near Kota Tinggi


KOTA TINGGI: Ten orphans in a van were hurt in a crash near here on Friday (Nov 3) evening, which also left the driver injured and another motorist dead.

Bandar Tenggara Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Awang Ismail Awang Hanafi said the accident at Jalan Kluang-Bandar Tenggara near Felda Sungai Sayong was reported at 6.37pm.

“The van from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Islam Bandar Tenggara and a car collided.

"The 54-year-old car driver (was pinned inside) the vehicle. Seven firemen from the Bandar Tenggara station rushed to the scene to free the victim with special equipment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The van’s driver, 41, survived with injuries. The 10 orphans, six boys and four girls, also (sustained) minor injuries,” he said, adding that the children's ages range from nine to 15.

Awang Ismail added that the injured were sent to Hospital Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim in Kulai.
