Military chief: Malbatt team in Lebanon safe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malbatt team members involved in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon are confirmed to be safe despite the tense situation at the country’s border following the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, says Armed Forces chief Jeneral Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman.

He added the members are performing their assignments as usual.

“Although the situation is a bit tense there (in Lebanon), they are fine and in good health,” he said after delivering his first mandate as the Armed Forces chief at a parade held at Dataran Panglima Tentera Darat, Sungai Besi yesterday.

Jen Mohammad was responding to a question about the safety of the Malbatt members involved in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, reported Bernama.

Based on news reports, the clashes between the Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon and Israeli forces were escalating.

Jen Mohammad said that the presence of the Malbatt team in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon was on the order of the United Nations (UN), and for now, they will remain in the country until they receive further instructions from the world body.

“They (the UN) will issue an order whether Malbatt remains there (in Lebanon) or withdraws. Pray that no accidents or mishaps befall the officers and members of Malbatt 850–10,” he added.

Also present at the parade were Malaysian Army commander Jeneral Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Royal Malaysian Air Force commander Jeneral Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan and Royal Malaysian Navy deputy chief Vice-Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain.
