Johari hopes more MPs will complete mandatory health checks

KUALA LUMPUR: While praying for Rafizi Ramli’s speedy recovery, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul hoped more Members of Parliament (MPs) will complete their mandatory health screenings immediately.

This comes after news of the Economy Minister’s hospitalisation following a heart ailment.

“Praying for YB Tuan Mohd Rafizi’s immediate recovery,” Johari said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday (Oct 21).

“I hope more MP’s will undergo health screenings before the Oct 31 deadline to ensure that they have a clean bill of health,” he added.

Last month, Johari announced that all MPs must undergo mandatory health examinations by Oct 31 as a precautionary measure.

Johari told lawmakers that he had witnessed 11 MPs collapsing in the Dewan Rakyat over the past 15 years.

Since the 2018 general election, four MPs have died – the majority from heart attacks.

Meanwhile, Johari reiterated that MPs were also allowed to do their health examinations at private medical facilities.

He said it was important for Parliament to keep a copy of the medical records of MPs in the event of an untoward medical incident.

At least 100 MPs have completed their health screenings so far.
