Man gets six months' jail for stealing 10 trays of eggs


KOTA KINABALU: A man was sentenced to six months' imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stealing 10 trays of chicken eggs at the Tawau Magistrate's Court.

Rakib Hassan, 39, admitted to the charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum on Wednesday (Oct 18).

The accused, according to the facts of the case, had stolen the items worth RM147 from the back of a four-wheel drive vehicle at a parking lot at Jalan Dunlop, Tawau at 9.30am on Oct 13.

The charge provides for a maximum seven years' imprisonment, or a fine, or both, on conviction.

Prosecuting officer Asst Supt Nur Intan Jamrin handled the prosecution while the accused was not represented.

Meanwhile, three men were fined RM10,000 each by the Magistrate's Court after they admitted to a charge of drink driving.

Magistrate Dayang Aidaku Amira Aminuddin meted out the punishment to Maaruf Abd Raud, 27; Baharuddin Kadir, 52; and Yusman Chudeng, 44 after they pleaded guilty to the offence under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

According to the facts sheet, Maaruf and Baharuddin were accused of the offence at Jalan Sim Hwa Seng while Yusman at Jalan St Patrick. They had committed the offence between 1.10am and 1.45am on Oct 7.

A breathalyser test on all three found the alcohol content in their blood over the permitted level of 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.

Dayang Aidaku also ordered for Maaruf and Baharuddin to spend three days in jail while Yusman was sentenced to four days behind bars.

Their driving licences were also suspended for two years.

The court also ordered for the men to spend six months in jail if they failed to settle the fine.
