Budget 2024: Defence Ministry to use RM7bil of allocation for development

PETALING JAYA: More than one third or RM7bil of the RM19.7bil allocation for the Defence Ministry under Budget 2024 will be used for development purposes.

"Of the total allocation, RM12.67bil is slated for operating purposes, which is an 11.04% increase. Meanwhile, RM7.05bil is for development purposes, an increase of 11.37%," said the ministry in a statement on Saturday (Oct 14).

It said with the allocation, three main agendas would be addressed, namely asset acquisition, border security and the welfare of Armed Forces personnel.

"The Budget 2024 (allocation) for the Defence Ministry will spur the commitment and spirit of members of the Armed Forces who are constantly enhancing their readiness for the country's sovereignty.

"The Defence Ministry and Armed Forces will strive to ensure the allocation given will be used diligently, prudently and with integrity for a safe, prosperous and secure nation," it said.

Among the allocations announced for the Defence Ministry included RM400mil for repairs and maintenance on all Rumah Keluarga Angkatan Tentera, acquisition of several military assets such as 60 armoured infantry vehicles, 50 High Mobility Light Tactical Vehicle (HMLTV), six Hovercraft Integrated Fast Interceptor and 733 support vehicles.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force will also receive 12 new helicopters whereas the Royal Malaysian Navy will continue its procurement of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS).
