IPOH: There has been a 6.8% drop in wildlife and environment-related cases this year, says Comm Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali.
The Bukit Aman internal security and public order department director said they recorded 192 cases from January to September this year, compared to 206 cases within the same period last year.
Comm Hazani said there were also 175 arrests made this year, while 243 individuals were arrested last year.
"Seizures for this year were about RM40mil while the total seizes last year was about RM86mil," he said in a press conference after an Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah meeting here at a hotel here on Saturday (Oct 7).
"This shows that there have been positive impacts towards the conservation of flora and fauna in the country," he said.
The cases involved seized wildlife, animal parts and forest treasures.
Hazani also said that a total of 56 investigation papers had been opened, with 53 of them completed and three more still under investigation.
"The police, Customs, Perhilitan and other relevant agencies and non-governmental organisations will continue to uphold the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 Agenda in conserving and preserving the country's natural treasure.
"If we do not protect our wildlife now, the future generations may not even recognise a turtle," he said.
"We will continue our efforts for the sake of the future generation," he added.
