Three people nabbed for smuggling RM1.5mil booze

KUALA LUMPUR: Three people, including a Vietnamese woman, were detained for allegedly smuggling RM1.5mil worth of alcoholic beverages.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Zam Hakim Jamaluddin said the 44-year-old woman was detained following a raid at a premises in Jalan Sungai Besi around 2pm on Friday (Sept 29).

"We also seized 107 boxes and 116 cartons of alcoholic beverages of various brands," he told a press conference at Cheras police headquarters here on Sunday (Oct 1).

Further investigation led police to arrest two men, a local and a foreigner aged 29 and 31 respectively, at another nearby premises on Friday, he said.

"We seized 1,818 cartons of alcoholic beverages, two mobile phones and a lorry used to smuggle the drinks," he added.

The two premises raided were used as storage for the smuggled items, he said.

"We believe the group has been operating for more than a year.

"The alcoholic beverages were smuggled through ports and secret passages.

"All three suspects have been remanded," he said.
