KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman's Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department inspected 17,241 commercial vehicles during a special operation that saw 34 arrests made.
Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mat Kasim Karim said 5,897 were lorries, 652 were buses, and 10,692 other types.
The five-day special operation from Wednesday to Sunday (Sept 20 to 24) was implemented to reduce the rate of road accidents, especially involving fatal accidents, he told reporters at Bukit Aman on Monday (Sept 25).
"In addition to ensuring that road users follow traffic rules and laws, it is also hoped that traffic is controlled and coordinated effectively," he said.
He said during the operation, six arrests were made under the Road Transport Act 1987, one under the Penal Code and 27 under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
"We issued a total of 2,724 summonses on lorries, 109 on buses and 629 on other vehicles," he said, adding that 35 vehicles were also found to be overloaded.
He said three lorries, a bus and 22 other vehicles were also seized during the operation.
In another operation held on Monday, Comm Mat Kasim said police issued summonses to 49 lorries and three cars.
"Thirty-one summonses were issued to lorries for operating during the time-limit ban from 6.30am to 9.30am while six were issued for unsafe cargo loads," he said.
